The Buddha Bunny was inspired by the Burning Man 2009 theme “Evolution". It played on the concept of  spiritual evolution and where it overlaps modern ideas of ecological evolution.

The 20 foot tall meditating rabbit sat in full-lotus position with light sources corresponding to the chakras. As the festival progressed a new chakra was lit each night.  Once the final crown chakra was illuminated, The Buddha Bunny became “enlightened”, setting off a whole series of new lighting effects woven throughout sculpture.  These lighting effects - in the eyes, nose, teeth, whiskers, chakras, along with thousands of LEDs underneath the skin- could all be controlled by the participants of the festival.

The Buddha Bunny’s giant feet were made of futons.  The skin was a patchwork of different fabrics sewn together like a quilt.  Each section of fabric represented an individual donor with their handwritten message about evolution.

Lastly, you were able to climb inside The Buddha Bunny through his tail.  Inside was a room where the floor, ceiling, and walls were made entirely of plexiglass mirror.  The viewer's image was multiplied imperfectly throughout the room, representing the engine of evolution, where DNA takes one code and multipies it imperfectly through time.
